No-shows and rain puts damper on Big Bad Soca

Some artistes scheduled to perform at Big Bad Soca were a no-show on stage on Wednesday night.

The show, held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, was meant to be a star-studded affair with performances from reigning soca monarch Voice, Patrice Roberts, Lyrikal, Shal Marshall, Iwer George, Nailah Blackman, dancehall artiste Shenseea, Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin, Fay Ann and Hip Hop star Cardi B.

By midnight, Teddyson John was the only artiste to have taken the stage.  Nailah Blackman and Shenseea performed sometime after but by 1 am, the Asylum Vikings, who were billed as the show’s headliners along with Cardi B and Montano took to the stage

Garlin apologised to the patrons for the late start, stating that the show should have started at 12 but they were waiting for artistes to arrive.

During their set which included Cardi B’s set and Montano’s performances, Patrice, Lyrikal and Majah Hype arrived at the venue.

Robert’s management told Loop the artiste ended up leaving the venue due to certain factors backstage. Loop understands there were no dressing rooms assigned to the artistes to change and shelter from the rain which fell for most of the early morning.

Loop reached out to Shal and Voice without response but we were told that Voice was not feeling well.

George’s manager Andre Jeffers of Perception Management said their artiste was feeling ill as well and had other “high priority” commitments. He said George also heard about the backstage conditions and decided not to attend.

Despite the no-shows, the Vikings gave a high energy performance, bigging up the Southerners for their vibes. Garlin criticised the venue layout which had a fence from the front of the stage separating the VIP patrons from the General ticket holders where all of the flag crews were based.

Garlin and Lyon’s performed some of their current and past hits with Shenseea joining Garlin on stage to deliver the remix to his song “Big Bad Soca”. She also performed her hit song “Loodie’, a collaboration with Vybz Kartel. Also joining Garlin on stage was Preedy. Dynamite from St Vincent also made a guest appearance.

Cardi B’s highly anticipated appearance disappointed patrons because of its brevity. Dressed in a flesh coloured and turquoise blue sequined bodysuit, the former ‘Love and Hip Hop’ star turned Billboard darling had everyone singing word for word to her songs ‘Bartier Cardi’ and her mega-hit ‘Bodak Yellow’.

She ended her short set abruptly though with an introduction for Montano who called for ‘cooperation over competition’ during his short but energetic set.
