Shubman Gill matches Virat Kohli as he makes debut in India vs Australia Melbourne Test

The Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is special for two individuals. On Saturday, Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj were handed their debut caps just before the toss. Shubman Gill received his cap from head coach Ravi Shastri and he became India Test player number 297. Mohammed Siraj, on the other hand, received his India cap from Ravichandran Ashwin and he became India Test player number 298. The Indian cricket team have made some changes to the line-up against Australia, including Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja in the team as they look to stay alive in the four-Test series following their horror loss in Adelaide.

However, Shubman Gill matched Virat Kohli in a unique way on debut. Shubman Gill is making his debut overseas and even the Indian cricket team skipper also made his debut overseas. Virat Kohli’s debut was against the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica in 2011. In that Test match, there were two more debutants in Praveen Kumar and Abhinav Mukund. In the past, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly made their debut overseas during the Lord’s Test against England in 1996.

Special moment for Mohammed Siraj

For Mohammed Siraj, it was a magnificent journey after a tough start to the tour. When Mohammed Siraj was practicing in Australia, news had come that he had lost his father. However, he won the hearts of the Indian cricket fans when he decided that he would not go back to India and instead would focus on his Test preparations.

Following the injury to Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj was handed his debut for the Melbourne Test. Siraj had played in both the warm-up games against Australia A and he picked up three wickets in the Drummoyne Oval game as well as two wickets in the Sydney warm-up match with the Pink Ball.

When he got his cap from Ashwin, Siraj was truly overwhelmed by the occasion and one hopes that he can get success against Australia on the grand occasion.
